Born and bred a wine enthusiast, Lindsay Hoopes grew up on a farm playing amidst the vineyards. Joining her father, Spencer Hoopes, during their daily walks along the vines, frequent conversations in the Hoopes household focused on growing cycles and brand strategy. Often found in the garden, Lindsay’s interests have always been rooted in nature. Developing a unique and in depth perspective of the wine growing world, it’s no surprise she has become one of the youngest and one of the few female winery leaders in all of Napa Valley. Influenced by her force of her Grandmother, Lindsay was taught to ask questions and challenge traditional roles. The youngest sibling in a large household, his fondest memories take place gathered around the dinner table, instilling in him a love for food, an appreciation for hospitality, and a commitment to family. After attending The George Washington University in Washington, DC, he left a career path in the sciences to pursue his love of wine, becoming a Certified Sommelier in 2014. He spent several years managing beverage programs for hotels and restaurants before eventually bringing his expertise to the distribution side of the wine business. Back in the states, Ridder launched a design and build firm in Seattle, WA before relocating to California to move into the development of innovative retail and public spaces. Transitioning away from the desk, Ridder took his talents into the field and began farming wine grapes, eventually becoming an organic grower of produce for wholesale distribution. While making and selling wine under the label Farm Life, he invented and received a patent on a precision wine dispenser for a refillable bottle program. Lindsay has always admired Aaron, but an unexpected twist of fate last year reunited the two, ignited shared passions, and cemented a future for the savants to create the Hoopes wines together. Aaron needs little introduction. Pott was destined to become a winemaker when, at a young age, Aaron accepted watered-down wine in lieu of milk during a visit to France. Aaron agreed with his co-conspirator waiter that “milk ees for babies.” Immediately, he was hooked: overtaken by wine’s prowess, or perhaps the alcohol, Pott vowed to dedicate himself to the romantic beverage….when in France, as they say. Meanwhile, in California, Pott embarked on his mission to delve into all aspects of winemaking, including practical application. Adopted in 2009, these twin sisters are never seen very far apart. Although we don’t know their breed, Lindsay affectionately calls them supermodel Corgies because of their long-legs and long tails, but Corgi-like stature. They are definitely herders, so don’t expect to get very far on the property before they announce your presence! Lindsay rescued them from a box underneath the freeway, and has called them her fur-babies since they were eight-weeks old. Today they do their best to control the wild turkeys from eating our grapes, fill Dante’s enormous paws, and provide sweet cuddles. Carnitas arrived on the farm with Rasher and they’ve been besties ever since. Don’t let her resemblance to Rasher fool you, she is a sweetheart. She loves to come over, say hello, and take treats from your hands. She also loves to be brushed and pampered. LuLi may be the largest of the pigs but she is a sweet girl. When she arrived, her face reminded us of the Lucha Libre wrestler masks from Mexico, hence the name, LuLi. You will often find LuLi relaxing by herself in some corner of the farm. Rasher didn’t exactly welcome her with open tusks but they seem to have agreed to disagree and keep their distance from each other. At the time, Rohan called him “Lello Bird” and the name stuck. Little did we know, he was a rooster and would grow to have the magnificent plumage he has now. He is the protector of the hens and will not hesitate to let you know when you’re intruding on the Clucks. The Clucks are our beautiful hens of various breeds. We have Rhode Island Reds, one Crème Legbar, five Dominiques, and five Speckled Sussex. Aside from being clucking beautiful, these hens serve as an integral part of our regenerative farming efforts by fertilizing the soil and infusing the land with vital nutrients. While the valley has grown and changed over the many years her love for the wines, sunsets, people and ambiance kept pulling her back until she ultimately decided to make a permanent move in 2018. A few year ago, Lisa decided she wanted to learn a little more about the other side of the wine industry. She took the role as Hoopes Director of Finance in October of 2021 to satiate her curiosity of what it really takes to make a winery run. Lindsay and Barrett had run into each other frequently at trade shows for most of a decade after Lindsay took over the winery in 2012 and had been in close contact about the industry during that time to bounce ideas off each other, talk shop in general, and trade stories about their children who are similar ages. Barrett’s passion for wine started young. His parents were avid wine lovers, ensuring he had champagne and sips of red wine on holidays as a child. He first learned about wine from an educational standpoint while working at multiple Back Bay Restaurant Group locations in Boston but started his proper wine training while working in Chapel Hill. The GM of his restaurant brought him to all the local trade shows, had him sitting in on all sales tastings, and asked Barrett to put together the restaurant’s first wine training program and manual. Prior to joining Hoopes, Barrett worked for 12 years with Kobrand Fine Wines in the northeastern US, selling some of the world’s most iconic wine brands and specialty spirits. While attending Columbia University in New York City, he became the sommelier and wine buyer for multiple restaurant groups. After finishing school, he decided to make his passion for wine his career, while also continuing his wine education with the Society of Wine Educators and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. Barrett grew up in New England, but has lived and worked in Colorado, North Carolina, California, and Germany during his unique journey. Although we don’t know their breed, Lindsay affectionately calls them supermodel Corgies because of their long-legs and long tails, but Corgi-like stature. They are definitely herders, so don’t expect to get very far on the property before they announce your presence! Lindsay rescued them from a box underneath the freeway, and has called them her fur-babies since they were eight-weeks old. Today they do their best to control the wild turkeys from eating our grapes, fill Dante’s enormous paws, and provide sweet cuddles. Having to compete with the bigger goats, Gertrude and Clementine, for treats, they are not ones to shy away from a good goat headbutt battle. Gertrude Ornethal Armistead Thurgood (G.O.A.T.) and Clementine These bearded beauties were named after famous bearded ladies and among the first of the herd to stake their claim on the farm. Not nearly as shy as Puck and Pan, these two never an opportunity for a snack. Whenever they see our clan walking up with a bucket of food scraps, they’re the first to greet us at the gate. They will not only battle Puck and Pan for the treats but each other as well. Rasher, Carnitas, and LuLi This little guy thinks he’s the king of the farm. He even manages to scare Jack away from the treats every now and then but Jack will give him a good buck to remind him who is the Top Dog on this farm. Carnitas arrived on the farm with Rasher and they’ve been besties ever since. Don’t let her resemblance to Rasher fool you, she is a sweetheart. She loves to come over, say hello, and take treats from your hands. She also loves to be brushed and pampered. LuLi may be the largest of the pigs but she is a sweet girl. When she arrived, her face reminded us of the Lucha Libre wrestler masks from Mexico, hence the name, LuLi. You will often find LuLi relaxing by herself in some corner of the farm. Rasher didn’t exactly welcome her with open tusks but they seem to have agreed to disagree and keep their distance from each other. Lello Bird and the Clucks When we bought our first batch of chicks, there was one bird that stood out from the rest and he was the only yellow chick of the bunch. At the time, Rohan called him “Lello Bird” and the name stuck. Little did we know, he was a rooster and would grow to have the magnificent plumage he has now. He is the protector of the hens and will not hesitate to let you know when you’re intruding on the Clucks. The Clucks are our beautiful hens of various breeds. We have Rhode Island Reds, one Crème Legbar, five Dominiques, five Speckled Sussex, and more exotic breeds. Aside from being clucking beautiful, these hens serve as an integral part of our regenerative farming efforts by fertilizing the soil and infusing the land with vital nutrients. She loves to investigate what anybody is doing in the barn yard.
